  • How are there enough women in polygamist communities for men to have multiple wives, sometimes as many as 20 at a time?
    N1591882060_1382_small

In fundamentalist Mormon sects there is always a designated Prophet, the Prophet is responsible for arranging or approving of all marriages.

Marrying without his permission will result in exile from the community. It may not be a physical exile (as in chasing them out of town) but it can be just as harsh. Being cut off from contact with friends and family is devastating in a close knit community.

If a man marries against the prophet's permission he becomes a pariah and his wife and children become the property of whoever the prophet chooses. In cases like this it is common for the new husband to marry not only the mother, but any of the daughters he chooses.

  • What's the best way to sell old art?
    N1591882060_1382_small

It depends on the art - if your "old art" is by Rembrandt then you obviously want to sell it differently than you would sell a painting by a lesser known local artist.

Ebay is a bad place to sell art unless you've got something really collectible that has been authenticated and appraised. I haven't used Etsy, but I know that there is lots of art there, and they seem to market to a young/hip demographic.

My advice is to do some research and find three or four of the pieces that look valuable, google the artist's name, get a little history (if possible) and go from there.

  • I need to buy/make a shadow box--anyone know where I can get one?
    N1591882060_1382_small

You can by empty shadow boxes at Micheal's craft stores - they sometimes have them at JoAnn fabrics on Aurora. If you don't need too much space in the box, you can pick up something called a "deep picture frame" at Ikea. I personally have had good luck at Value Village.

If none of this works out you can just get some kind of wooden box and glue a picture frame to the front.

  • What should I see in Paris?
    N1591882060_1382_small

The museum of natural history is spectacular - they have a huge room with whale skeletons on one end and mice on the other - it's like Noah's ark. There is also the Fragonard museum of veteranary medicine.

They have a large collection of deformed animal and human skeletons as well as a skinned and dried horseman riding a skinned horse while dried babies dance around its feet. Not for the faint of heart, but certainly worth seeing if you are into that kind of stuff.

  • What is the best shoe repair in Seattle?
    N1591882060_1382_small

The shoe repair shop in Broadway market is excellent. I've had several shoes resoled there and a leather jacket sewn up, I haven't been up to the Hill for about a year, so I hope they're still in business!

  • Where can I get fried okra in Seattle?

You can get fried Okra at Ezell's chicken. It takes about ten minutes because they cook it up while you wait.
