if "mentally ill" is a label you would like to attach to yourself, I acknowledge your right to use it, basmentdweller3.

my bias is I'm working toward education and demystification. clementine assumed in her question that substance abuse causes mental illness. that assumption is inaccurate.

    I stand by my answer.

you're right, the media still use the term "mental illness" because it makes a good sound bite; yet it is largely a social construct popular long ago to define a group of vulnerable individuals as dangerous others to be feared and/or pitied and/or warehoused to keep the public safe.

it remains vague, archaic, and punative. what does it mean?

clinically, it means nothing, other than some sort of organic condition, perhaps. professionals use specific terms for disorders. see the DSM-IV-TR.

and yes, chronic drug abuse leads to organic damage throughout the body: the brain is only one part of the system with the potential to be damaged with long-term abuse.

regardless, you completely ignored my point, which is that people often use substances to self-medicate. something in their lives is no longer working; by using, they attempt to alleviate their distress. this can lead to long-term abuse and greater dysfunction.

yeah, I'm not a starbucks person, but perhaps I could try the fake one. thanks!

  • What are some widely known causes of mental illness besides genetics, substance abuse, and traumatic events?
    Avatar_default

uh, wrong. substance abuse does not cause mental illness.

people who use substances are more often than not self-medicating away their pain.

also, the use of the term 'mental illness' is archaic, vague, and punative.

best place to get some work done online during this weekend's heat wave with free wi-fi, air conditioning, and food?

  • Cheap option for dealing with punctured rear scooter tire?
    Avatar_default

yup, depends on the scooter. do the tires have inner tubes? then it's an easy fix and cheaper.

mine does not, and a punctured back tire cost me 145 bucks three months ago, but my guy picked it up where it happened, delivered it home to me the next day, and threw in an oil change to help make it more worth the cost.

  • French poetry?

oh! turn her on to rilke (letters to a young poet).

a bilingual collection, the complete french poems of rainer maria rilke, is worth reading again and again.

his poetry is lovely, passionate, with existential leanings, and accessible in both french and english.

i had a positive experience as a beginner back in the mid-'90s in design and typography, and the instructors were well-known, respected, and award-winning local designers. don't know what's going on there now, but I learned enough to know my way around the ps and qs of design, and I enjoyed it.

the art institute is a for-profit school, ridiculously expensive, and they let anyone in who can pay regardless of talent or intelligence. avoid it. just mho.
