  • The best way to book a tour...

    Julian,
I think the best first step is to work on bands you would like to play with in various cities. That way you can have ideas to present to a booking agent at a club. I always ask touring bands (unless they are huge and will bring people in on their own) to give me ideas of locals. I don't even confirm a band from another city who is unknown without a local anchor.
It's best to focus on just few clubs you deem the best for your style of music. Many bands don't do research on clubs ahead of time and invariably I get blink 182 or dave matthews style bands asking to play the comet and I am dumbfounded. You are better off playing a house party in a city to a few appreciative souls than a crappy club date. Good timing on booking August. I am already holding dates for touring acts in that month right now! Good luck

Seattle has a wealth of amazing drummers-all of the above mentioned by Emily and Dave, I am in agreement with!!! Adding Colin from Pica Beats, Final Spins!

Well that's not the case at the comet. Especially since we pride ourselves on booking no name bands.

I was being sincere. I rarely (if ever) get feedback from bands about this. If I did I could try and fix it. But, I guess I would just expect a certain amount of tardiness in the music scene. After all 9 out of 10 bands never load in on time. It's just the way things are, you might wanna just loosen up a bit.I have tried to get our staff on board with that philosophy as well. I recently fired a door person for being too hard on the bands around this very subject and have had to let go of a sound person for not treating bands respectfully.I have high standards for our staff being professional and helpful to the bands that play. I really want to know if these standards are not up to par.

  • Lennon or McCartney?
    16645_1249840976977_1558076266_641046_2911648_s_small

Ha I'm with Dave. George Harrison. But Lennon by a long-shot. And if it were Beatles or Stones. I say Stones.

  • What's a favorite band (of yours) no one in Seattle has heard of?--Well, save for you (obvi) and, let's say, one-hand full of other persons (tops).
    16645_1249840976977_1558076266_641046_2911648_s_small

Here are some of my faves:
Wayfinders -Jan Norberg is the flower-child David Bowie of Seattle and a musical genius!
((Low Hums)) Members of Sera Cahoone doing heavy Neil Young/psych jams
The Curious Mystery-Nick in the band built his own sitar! (also Shana Cleveland's solo stuff is lovely!)
    The Diminished Men-Ennio Morriconeeeeeeeeeee
Tiny Light-droney soundtrack music for wooden shjips fans
This Blinding Light -influenced by Loop/Spacemen 3
    heavy and loud
Angelo Spencer et Les Hauts Sommes -(OLY) happy upbeat and french singing ala Dodos
King Dude -TJ from Book of Black Earth's solo project -satanic folk music
    The Correspondents -quirky and vaudevillian
Final spins-psych pop -love Joe Syverson's vocals
    The Tempers -art punk
    Pearly Gate Music-so pretty !!
    ..........
There 's a start. Seattle has an amazing music scene right now!

  • What are your thoughts on 3 or 4 bands on a Bill?
    16645_1249840976977_1558076266_641046_2911648_s_small

As a show go-er I agree 3 bands is probably ideal. But as a booker, I've learned a lot of things. Bands cancel last minute, and if you have 4 bands booked then you still have 3 bands on the show and don't have to scramble to find another band. Also 4 bands increases draw, keeps people in the club drinking longer and also gives opportunities to more bands to get a show. It seems at the Comet we usually have people sticking around and we have to kick them out at 1:45 so 4 bands is rarely an issue.

  • Band Vs Soundmen?
    16645_1249840976977_1558076266_641046_2911648_s_small

If that were to happen at the comet, I hope you would let me know. Our rule is that the sound person should be there at least a half hour before the bands. Sound people can be notoriously grumpy, I've noticed that in many clubs. They see the club as their home, and you are a guest, I suppose. But it's good to have some persepective. Some bands can be very high maintenance and give venue staff a lot of grief and venue workers can get very burnt out. I would just suggest to be as gracious and as understanding as possible, but if behaviour seeps into outright rudeness, and your sound is horrible, send off an e-mail to the booker. Feedback is always welcome!
