  • I'm a student and I need a VALUABLE part time job. Where do I even start?
    69470_550796517378_17700402_32266336_8256335_n_small

To add to Dan, since you had it in all caps:

    3. What does "valuable" mean to you? A good salary? A resume builder? A short commute?

  • Feeling conflicted about having a job I hate in a poor economy...
    69470_550796517378_17700402_32266336_8256335_n_small

Is there a non-profit organization you believe in that could use a volunteer for a few hours a week? Contributing to something philanthropic can ease the distress of a shitty job in the short term. It will also help you meet new people.

Also, if you were just treated poorly, underpaid and held to unreasonable standards I'd say to suck it up until you find a new job; however, if you are really being asked to compromise your ethics then you should do everything you can to get out of there. Network as much as possible!

  • Is PMI certification valuable?
    69470_550796517378_17700402_32266336_8256335_n_small

You didn't say what state / city you're moving to, but also take the types of industries that will be available to you into consideration. [All other things being equal] PM certifications matter more to government, manufacturing, and supply chain type organizations than they do to tourism, financial, and high tech companies.

  • How to find a Small Business Mentor?
    69470_550796517378_17700402_32266336_8256335_n_small

I found myself in the exact same position two years ago, and randomly stumbled across a solution. I was at my favorite bar, Bleu Bistro, and ran into the owner who I had chatted with a few times. At the time I was learning how to do my own accounting and asked him how he had learned. We ended up having a good chat about small business challenges and rewards, and he continues to be a person I can go to for advice.

Maybe there is a small business owner of any kind that you run into & admire / respect? Many of the challenges faced by small business owners translate across industries and both can benefit from the other person's perspective.

  • If one is looking to change careers, how does one list all of the irrelevant experience?
    69470_550796517378_17700402_32266336_8256335_n_small

There are some skills that employers are always looking for in a job candidate. These can include things like: being a good team player, the ability to take initiative and work with little or no direction, manage other people toward an outcome, being detail oriented, etc. Usually these are listed in the job description. Rewrite the "irrelevant" experience" on your resume to show how you demonstrated those skills in prior positions.

  • Comment on Dan Williams's answer…
    69470_550796517378_17700402_32266336_8256335_n_small

First, I would break that into two target audiences: one that is "small to mid-size, growing, and local businesses" and one that is "new products and are focused on sustainability". Then I would find out if there are any list serves, meet ups, etc. where you might be able to network with people who are interested in those two topics. Start a blog and post stories that are about current trends or great advice related to marketing / sustainability, but not articles about your business so that you can be considered a subject matter expert.

Also focus on making it easy for people you have worked with to refer you to friends by making sure you are "google-able", that they have your business card and actually let them know you welcome referrals.

  • Which game system should I get for a family of four - Kinect or Wii?
    69470_550796517378_17700402_32266336_8256335_n_small

You should get a Wii for the reasons already listed...and because the Kinect can only accommodate two players. The Kinect requires at least 10 feet of unobstructed space in your living room (6 feet from the TV to where you stand, about four feet behind you for movements). That means no coffee table.

  • What platform/programming language should I use for my new website?
    69470_550796517378_17700402_32266336_8256335_n_small

I also agree with the RFP / requirements starting point. However...

I am a huge fan of self hosted wordpress for small \ medium businesses (SharePoint for an enterprise). It provides a good balance between customization ability and ease of use for non-technical people. The platform is updated regularly and there are plug ins for almost anything you want to do; but, the ecommerce plug ins are a bit weak. Selling PDF / eBooks isn't that complicated though so they might work for you. There are also a ton of template designs for the look and feel that you can use as is or customize for your needs. Content maintenance can be handled by a non-techy person and you'll only need to hire a developer when you want a larger change, and they won't have to start from ground zero so it will be less expensive than a proprietary site. Wordpress is also pretty decent at scaling if it is developed correctly so it will grow with your business.
