  • Finest/Cheapest Washington wines under $10?
    Nufer_small

Barnard Griffin Chardonnay and also Sauvignon Blanc are my favorite white at 10 or under.

For reds, the K cellars Charles and Charles Cabernet Sauvignon/ Syrah is my pick. What you see now is that so many Washington wineries are pussy-footing with syrah, blending it into basic cab. blends that are ordinarily Bordeaux-inspired, such as Cab/ Merlot. What K does is go whole-hog, with a 50/50 cab/ syrah, more like a Provence blend. Other Washington reds that do that blend can cost a lot more.

  • Place on Capitol Hill to rent out for a birthday party?
    Nufer_small

Barca on 11th Ave., upstairs, is a good place, and it can be free to rent on weekday nights.

Soul Repair, on 10th, is also good. I don't know the rental arrangement there, but I've been to a few events in that space.

  • Where are hip area/places in Portland Oregon ?
    Nufer_small

I'll limit myself to four different spots:

Great restaurant: Navarre, 10 NE 28th St. Terrific Spanish and French food, best ordered in tapas-size portions, with a shrewd wine list.

Brew pub: Lucky Lab, 915 SE Hawthorne, dog-friendly picnic table seating outside.

Cafe with good beer and poetry readings: Waypost, 3120 N. Williams Ave.

Swank Hotel cocktail lounge: where the Mallory used to be is now the Hotel deLuxe, 729 SW 15th Ave.

Hip? In Portland, even the rotgut downtown business district has its hip side.

  • Where can I buy Lakefront Brewery beers?
    Nufer_small

I would first contact the brewery and ask them who their Seattle distributor is. My guess is Click.

Then I would call the distributor and ask who sells it in Seattle.

  • Where should I hold my birthday, this Tuesday, April 12?
    Nufer_small

The Bar at Olympia Pizza on 15th Ave. E. usually has plenty of space on Tuesday. Happy hours are 12-6 and 10-2, and there are some good food deals then.

Barca on 11th between Pike and Pine has the upstairs space, which has been usually free to use on weekdays. There's a bar up there, too.

Vito's on 8th and Madison is definitely worth checking, with their private rooms.

Any place you pick, you should call ahead to see what the latest rules are.

Not to be greedily mercenary, but the birthday baby doesn't have to worry about who pays for what, right? You might want to let everybody buy you drinks.

    Happy birthday.

  • Where is the best place to get a cocktail, but also get work done?
    Nufer_small

Liberty on 15th Ave. E. between Republican and Mercer.

Good lighting, good drinks, and enough room to hang out, until it gets crowded later.

  • Is my aged alcohol worth anything?
    Nufer_small

They seem to me to be more valuable as liquid baseball cards than as whiskeys: i.e., collectible because of the packaging and rarity.

I would google them or ask a liquor dealer in another state who specializes in fancy bottles.

You could donate them to some charity and take a whopping deduction on your taxes, but the IRS won't allow much of a deduction if you get audited.

  • What should I do with raspberry liqueur?
    Nufer_small

Thanks to Washington liquor laws, it's extremely difficult to get decent Creme de Cassis here, so when friends of mine make a Kir or Kir Royale, they often substitute a raspberry sweet wine or liqueur for that critical ingredient.

You might look up a recipe for those drinks, but you might also need to experiment, since we don't know how sweet your stuff is vs. CdC. Maybe start with a teaspoon of it, then fill the glass with Aligote (Dom. de Prieure has one for $12) for a Kir. For a Kir Royale, use sparkling wine (Silver Cap Brut, for $11) or if you're nuts, a full-blown Champagne. Then add a twist of lemon.

  • What bars serve the most local (WA distilled) spirits?
    Nufer_small

Unfortunately for you but fortunately for my liver, I cannot answer this question with any kind of authority, as I've not been to most bars in Seattle within the last few months.

I would begin with two authoritative references: Andrew at Liberty and Murray at Zig Zag.
