    Good call. Thanks, Josh. I definitely didn't know that, but looks like you're correct.

    http://apps.leg.wa.gov/wac/default.aspx?cite=352-32-210 says:

    " (1) Opening, possessing alcoholic beverage in an open container, or consuming any alcoholic beverages in any state park or state park area is prohibited except in the following designated areas and under the following circumstances in those state parks or state park areas not posted by the director or designee as closed to alcohol pursuant to subsection (4) of this section:

    (a) In designated campsites or in other overnight accommodations, by registered occupants or their guests; provided ELC users obtain written permission through state parks application process;

    (b) In designated picnic areas, which shall include those sites within state park areas where picnic tables, benches, fireplaces, and/or outdoor kitchens are available, even though not signed as designated picnic areas and public meeting rooms;

    (c) In any reservable group day use facility by any authorized group which has paid the reservation fee and applicable damage deposit and which has obtained prior permit authorization to have alcohol by the park manager; and

    (d) In any building, facility or park area operated and maintained under a concession agreement, wherein the concessionaire has been licensed to sell alcoholic beverages by the Washington state liquor control board, and where the dispensation of such alcoholic beverages by such concessionaire has been approved by the commission."

    I think Part B means it's ok as long as we're near a picnic table.

    So the closest state parks to Seattle appear to be:
    -Bridle Trails, which looks like it's just trails, not really suitable for a BBQ
    -St Edward, which is in Kenmore - sounds like it will work, but a little far away.
    -several across the sound (bainbridge, etc).

    It's not that boating in general isn't for me. It just that it's not an option for this event. Aside from a couple of canoes and kayaks, I don't know anyone with a boat in Seattle - certainly not a boat (or boats) that would fit 50 people, and I think renting would be out of the group's price range.

    Thanks again for the creative suggestion and the warning.

    Thanks for the response. Unfortunately, boating isn't really an option for me, but hopefully that will give someone else who stumbles on this post a great idea.

    I've seen people drinking, usually surreptitiously in a number of Seattle parks, but usually in small groups. Where would you go if you had a big group and wanted to minimize the risk of getting in trouble?

    What is the best Seattle park for a 50ish-person BBQ, with drinking?

    www.achewood.com is hilarious, but a lot of the humor is based on character development, so it takes a bit of work to get into it. Read a few, but eventually you'll have to start at the beginning and read them all (or at least I did). Don't miss the blogs...

    xkcd.com - nerdy, but often very funny. Mostly one-off comics, rather than ongoing storylines.

    questionablecontent.net - Not really sure why I still read this one. Not very funny - more like a soap opera for hipsters. Started reading and got addicted somewhere along the way.
