  • Why are the colors in the TV show "House" so washed out?
    Qlandav2ex_small

I do not regularly watch this show but have viewed a few episodes. What sticks out in my memory is that the real story is in the dialog and faces of the actors as they interact in the course of the plot, not so much the scenes, which are often the confines of the medical facility itself - sterile and controlled.

I searched to see if there were any notes indicating that the color palette was controlled in any way to keep the focus more on the persons and less on the environment, but did not find it.

Any new television set will have different color settings to choose from with some standard choices of color emphasis. Mine has category choices under a menu for Video Settings for Movie, Sports, Game, Enhanced, and Other. You can fine tune the settings for specific categories and so could play with the settings for Saturation, Hue, Contrast, etc. to come up with the ideal "House" color settings and leave that under one category. That way you could select the alternate palette when you go to watch that particular program.

You really need to hunt around in the control menus to find out all of the various ways you can enhance your viewing experience with your new screen in your particular room and lighting conditions.

  • Childproof knife storage options
    Qlandav2ex_small

For years I used an 18" magnetic bar that attached to the wall and held all my knives. Now that I keep flighted birds, part of making the house safe was retiring the knives from a position of easy contact (if a flight path went awry) to a lazy susan inside the large corner lower cabinets and later now to a drawer. In fact I found a smaller set of knives I use most can float at the back of the drawer on the top of the rubberized plastic cutlery holder. That drawer is always easily within reach.

I think I got the fixture at Sur La Table in Seattle. Mine has wood trim. This one has aluminum. I am sure other companies sell similar.

By the way, the bar remains on the wall but now has a number of non-lethal tools stuck to the magnet along with a few bird items (like the brush I use to scrub the insides of the hummingbird feeder bottles) and other items for easy access.

Your choices will depend how much trust and how likely your child is to be a good climber as they grow. There was nowhere my mother could put the cookie jar in the kitchen that I could not eventually reach. Bravo to you for careful parenting!

  • Insurance for a smart phone?
    Qlandav2ex_small

For your next phone you may want to consider a new process that makes your phone water safe with no case required - Liquipel.

    http://www.liquipel.com/

It seems really quite remarkable and for $59 will apparently give your new phone the ability to withstand a dunking in water with no ultimate ill effects (some drying out process may be required).

  • What is directly across the Pacific Ocean from Seattle?
    Qlandav2ex_small

Using 47°36' N Latitude and Google Earth to find the appropriate landing point on the Asian continent you appear to arrive on the coast of Sakhalin Island, part of Sakhalin Oblast, a federal subject of Russia. It appears to be a mainly rural area of the curved coast that is NNW of Dolinsk (because of the shape of the lower part of the island).

  • What brand of jeans have a Britain flag?
    Qlandav2ex_small

Interesting question that got me searching.

Well it turns out that it is a fairly common design to include in jeans.
When you are searching you may want to use the search term "union jack" as that is one of the common terms for the red/white cross design that makes up the venerable flag of the UK.

I found mention for Twiggy LONDON jeans, Union Jack Jeans, and some designs by Tooche Halcyon (see:
    http://www.telegaleria.com/p-1964-slim-and-lift-jeans-with-union-jack-leather-pocket-tooche-w6506.aspx )

The inclusion of that design on pockets has been across different brands as mentioned in this Slate.com article about jeans design from 2005 tilted "The Secret Language of Jeans":
    http://www.slate.com/articles/arts/fashion/2005/11/the_secret_language_of_jeans.html

Sorry, but no definitive answer here. You gotta stop someone wearing them and ask where they got those jeans.

  • Really GOOD, (yet affordable) Metalsmith in town??
    Qlandav2ex_small

I would suggest you take your broken cast iron base to the folks at Morel Industries (formerly Ballard Brass & Aluminum Inc.) and ask for their advice about how to repair or replace it. It may be that a replacement piece could be cast new. Experts that work in metals may have other solutions that would work as well or better. Perhaps a new base could be fabricated by a good metals shop out of sheet steel and welding processes. If they don't do one-off pieces or think you can get a better solution elsewhere, I bet they know where best to go around Seattle.

By the way, I believe the process that will work best in joining these broken pieces would be brazing, Cu-Zn (brass) being used as the joining material (it requires much higher temperatures in the process).

  • Mother's Day gift for a cancer fighter
    Qlandav2ex_small

She needs your time and love. Send her a handwritten letter in the mail with some great story from your childhood about how she came through as a great Mom in supporting your growth and development and express how much that event affected your life and how much it means to you.

Also request a rescheduling of the "day" for the near future when you can go and visit her and treat that time like your own official Mother's Day. She may know by her treatment schedule when she might be feeling best to be active and "have a day" with you.

  • How long after employed before you must apply for a liquor certified card/
    Qlandav2ex_small

In general, you need to have your MAST (Mandatory Alcohol Server Training) permit within 60 days of starting work. There are some situations like if you are conducting beer and wine tasting events where you need to have it at the time the event is occurring. You can earn it online easily and there is a reference list with active links on the Washington State Liquor Control Board website.

    Useful links:

    http://liq.wa.gov/licensing/mast-permits
    http://liq.wa.gov/licensing/get-mast-permit
    http://liq.wa.gov/publications/licensing/mast-lists/MAST_provider_list_4162012.pdf

Points copied from the WA State Liquor Control Board website (as of May 2012):

•You need a MAST permit if you serve alcohol or manage alcohol servers at a liquor licensed business that sells alcohol for on-premises consumption
•You must obtain a MAST permit within 60 days of hire
•Note: If you are a grocery store employee conducting beer and wine tastings, you are required to have a Class 12 MAST permit at the time of the tasting event
•The training is provided by private entities that have been certified by the WSLCB
•Upon completion of the training and exam, the MAST trainer or provider will issue your MAST permit within 30 days
•Permits are good for five years
•You must have your permit readily available for inspection while at work

  • How much might I charge for a handmade plushie like the one pictured below?
    Qlandav2ex_small

It really is very nice Kristen.

I would like to see your artistic impression of a parrot in such a medium someday. The gal on my shoulder has a full body made up of a largely monochromatic pallet (with many shades of grey ranging from white to almost black) plus a bright red tail. I would want you to see an African Grey in real life so you could really get a good look of form, texture, and variation to inspire your interpretation. Of course, the world of birds and parrots is filled with lots of colors and variations.
