  • Who is this actress?
    Mototour_small

Don't laugh, but I think it's Nico from the Velvet Underground. The film is "Sweet Skin" or "Strip-Tease" (1963), directed by Jacques Poitrenaud and costarring Dany Saval and "Big" Joe Turner. Serge Gainsbourg makes a cameo as a piano player.

  • How do you stop a persistent scam/spam caller from calling your place of business?
    Mototour_small

The Coworker would do well to acquaint himself with The Fair Debt Collection Practices Act. Here's the gist of two letters I sent to get debt collectors off our new telephone number:

"You have contacted our number, presumably to collect or recover a debt. I am requesting that you provide validation of this debt in writing, and justification why our phone number should remain on your active list.

The Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (often called the "FDCPA"),  15 USC 1692, provides that debts that are pursued by a debt collector be validated. If you cannot provide validation of our debt (provide creditor, dates of activity/communication attempts from creditor, and the names of the debtors, amount owing, account numbers) then pursuant to my rights under federal debt collection laws, I am requesting that you cease and desist communication with me, as well as my employer, in relation to this and all other alleged debts you claim I owe. I am aware that further communications by you will make you liable for sums up to $1000, plus actual damages and counsel fees. You may contact me to tell me that you are ceasing communications, once.

You are hereby notified that if you do not comply with this request, I will immediately file a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission and the Washington State Attorney General’s office. Civil and criminal claims will be pursued."

No debt collector actually responded to this, but neither did any debt collector attempt to contact us again.

  • Should we change the name of Washington State?
    Mototour_small

Sure. Name it Salish. If the name "Salish Sea" can be officially recognized to represent the waterways of our coastal area the Strait of Georgia, the Strait of Juan de Fuca, and the Puget Sound, then give the Evergreen State a name to represent the indigenous people who were original inhabitants, like "Salish".

Who would be a greater threat to a country: Charlie Chaplin or Gunter Grass?

Peel a fresh 2-inch knob of ginger root and slice it into thin slices. Bring 4 cups of water to a boil in a saucepan. Once water is boiling, add the ginger. Cover the saucepan and reduce heat to a simmer for 15-20 minutes. Strain the tea. Add honey and lemon to taste.

Or go to a grocery or drug store or health foods market to get boxed ginger tea.

  • Is it wise to play the stock market on an individual basis?
    Mototour_small

This may sound snarky but it isn't: if you look at your investment in the stock market as "play", you should not go it alone.

People new to individual investments can start small, in direct purchase plans or in investment clubs. Penny stocks are very volatile and possibly best fit the aggressive, highly informed investor.

If you don't know much about stocks, please read Andrew Tobias' The Only Investment Guide You'll Ever Need, The Motley Fool, and investopedia.com. If you want to learn about investment clubs, BetterInvesting.org run by the National Association of Investors Corporation is a great place to start. NAIC can show you how to assess the growth prospects of a stock and calculate upside potential.

I used to be a NAIC member and in an investment club many years ago, and now invest individually in mutual funds (strongly recommended before getting into stocks), exchange-traded funds, and stocks. My direct purchase plan stocks include Procter & Gamble (NYSE:PG), which I mention because as a known company with both growth and income benefits, it is great for beginner investors.

  • Phone spam recourse

These calls happened to us even when we were on the Do-Not-Call list. If offshore scammers with spoofing and autodialing technology disrespect your wishes to be removed from their list, being on the Do-Not-Call list will not save you.

The business that employs these people is engaged in illegal actions, that's why the employees don't give any information.

There are some things you can do if you have a landline:
    1. Get a machine that shows the caller-id. Don't pick up if it's an out-of-state number you don't recognize.
    2. Get rid of the landline. (We did this. No more calls.)
    3. There's a soundfile you can use for your voicemail/answering machine that mimics the three-beep "no circuit" tone that immediately precedes the canned "we're sorry, the number you have reached is not in service. Please check the number and call again, or ask an operator for assistance." Use of this soundfile may lead to your number being dropped from the autodialer database if you record it immediately before your "sorry we're not answering the phone" message.

  • Is there a decent chlorine bleach alternative that can get rid of mildew in towels?
    Mototour_small

    Courtesy of lifehacker.com:
    1. Put your towels in the washing machine, using the hottest water available. Add one or two cups of white vinegar. Do not add detergent, fabric softener, or any other products at this time. Run the washer.
    2. Leave the towels in the washer and wash the same load again just as you would normally with laundry soap. Again, use the hottest water available. Don't use fabric softener or any other products.
    3. Dry the load in the dryer using a high heat setting. Towels should be thoroughly dry when you pull them out. If they're not dry, put them back in, or move them immediately outside and hang them in the sunlight.
