If you don't want to break your wrists, learn to fall properly because you'll be falling at every level of skateboarding. A judo class could help, but basically *do not lock your elbows*. When in doubt, bend your knees and crouch low. And roll or slide instead of trying to stop yourself using just your hands. I was in your same boat at one point. I started learning around 24 or 25. I never had much luck in Cap Hill. When you get good enough to roll down a bit of a hill, the brick section in front of SCCC is really fun. If you go later at night, there are less obstacles. For now, there is that little area at the top where the trees are that is fairly flat and not usually crowded. Parking lots at night can work, but none really stick out to me.
