What time should I get in line this weekend for Urban Craft Uprising for my best chances at getting a swag bag?

  • What's Seattle's best craft fair right now?
    Cactus1_with_2_puff_small

I totally agree with the previous answer - Urban Craft Uprising is pretty much the best handmade craft show in Seattle. The quality of merchandise is always very high, they have a wide variety of vendors and there's always fun raffle drawings, demos and book signings during the day. It's a lot of fun...and I say this as both a vendor and a shopper!

An up-and-coming entry into the "best craft show" category would be shows produced by etsyRAIN.com - the local team of craft sellers on Etsy.com. (Full-disclosure: I am the organizer for etsyRAIN :)
Because of our show location (the lobby of the Intiman Theater at Seattle Center) our shows have a more intimate vibe than a lot of other shows. With no more than 60 vendors on two floors of the lobby, it is super easy to shop our shows too! We've gotten some great reviews on our previous shows and look forward to our next show in October :)

Visit me at Urban Craft Uprising this weekend @ the Seattle Center Exhibition Hall on Mercer Ave. 11am - 5pm Sat and Sunday - free admission. My booth is on a corner with a banner that says "Hammer and Torch" (a collaboration I'm working on with a friend). I should have some Secret Promise Rings with me for you to check out...just ask! :)

  • i need to get wedding bands, you know. rings?
    Cactus1_with_2_puff_small

I might be able to help...please visit my Etsy shop http://imakecutestuff.etsy.com to see the simple band style rings (I call them "Secret Promise Rings") I make out of sterling silver...with or without a custom sentiment stamped inside. The rings in my shop are 6mm wide, but I can make then wider or thinner too. Two font styles available. Just tell me what you need and I'll do my best to make it happen! :)

What are some of your favorite handmade / local art shops in Seattle?

  • Crafting skills unite! (to fix my glasses)

I love the MacGyver-ing idea Moxie! There are lots of parts available for just that sort of thing at Goodwill and that glue idea is brilliant.

Alternately, if you have a jeweler friend who works with metal, they might be able to rivet the hinges together for you. If you don't know any jeweler people and want to explore that route, I might be able to help...just come and talk to me at http://UrbanCraftUprising.com this weekend (Seattle Center Exhibition Hall on Mercer) - I'll be in the corner jewelry booth with the blue "Hammer and Torch" banner (look for the owl pendant) just a few spaces in from the door :)

  • How important (and necessary) is a business license for an online crafts business? Do you need one to sell on Etsy etc?
    Cactus1_with_2_puff_small

The real question is: How important (and necessary) is your craft business to you? If you have even the slightest desire to make money by making stuff - even if that goal is just to make some "pocket cash" - then it is really in your best interest to go legit and do it right from the start.

Like Rosalie said, it's super easy to get a business license in WA State, so why not do it? If you register, then you can apply for a resale permit and this will allow you to buy your supplies at wholesale (or tax-exempt at some locations like Packaging Specialties) - this will widen your profit margin and make it possible for you to grow your business.

Talk to your accountant or if you don't have one, get a free consultation from a local CPA who specializes in small businesses. They will steer you in the right direction and if you hire them, they can help you get your books set up so it's easy to keep track of your expenses.

  • How good a resource for sales is Etsy, really?
    Cactus1_with_2_puff_small

Etsy is great. Everyone knows how much I appreciate them. However -- to be successful, one should really use their Etsy shop like a really good looking shopping cart - an extension of their overall business and a place to close the sale.

Like any business, success depends on the tenacity of the seller. One has to make great stuff, make it well, price it well, tell people about it (both in your world and outside of it), tell them where to buy it and keep telling them about it. Then, make more great stuff, make it well, price it well...etc etc.

Marketing is key to any successful business -- that includes a business on Etsy.
