  • Meat salad!?
    N1022796599_2051_small

'Zaw has a good spinach, sundried tomato, feta and BACON salad. Makes a good side to their prosciutto and pear pizza. But bacon is more of a condiment than an ingredient in this salad. The Pagliaccio salad (at Pagliacci's) has a plethora of tasty little ham chunks in it. Can you tell I have pizza on the brain? You could always do a salad bar and then add all the meat you want to it.

    Congratulations, you have an opinion.
Btw - I don't even wear crocs, but I'm not going to condemn the 10 percent of Seattle that does. LOL.

An orchid expert at the flower and garden show said that often orchids are killed by having the roots too confined and wet. I agree with Tom - get them out of those confined little pots and into some looser bark medium.

To water you can take them out and soak in a sink of water/dilute orchid fertilizer overnight, then drain and put back out for display. Apparently they don't like to sit in soil or water, they grow in trees.

Tom is right, you probably need to protect the young seedlings with a cloche - which can be fancy, or as simple as a plastic bottle with the bottom cut out staked over the top of your seedling. Squirrels like to dig up my seedlings... furry little bastards. Also - "Sluggo" is a slug bait that is OMRI (organic materials review institute) reviewed safe for kids/birds/pets and easy to sprinkle around your seedlings.

  • Tulip bulbs: is there a continuum great to bad places to buy bulbs?
    N1022796599_2051_small

Stick to good nurseries - such as Swansons, Sky, and Molbaks, City People's, Furney's. If you want quality, avoid big box stores like Home Despot, Lowe's, Fred Meyer, and Walmart. They buy cheap to sell cheap, and their quality is dismal. Plus, who knows what kind of pesticides and crap they've been spraying on them - they'll do anything to keep their cheapoh merch salable for as long as possible. A reputable nursery will only sell you quality plants.

There are some online retailers as well, such as Michigan bulb that seem to have good quality. You might try popping onto Myfolia.com and asking in the forums there. It's a gardening website full of smart people who would have opinions about such things. I typically get all of my bulbs from the Arboretum's annual bulb sale, but that is already done this year.

  • how do we rid this town of polar fleece and crocs without lighting them on fire?
    N1022796599_2051_small

I guess I'd have to answer your question with a question - How do we rid this town of uptight fashionistas who think that they have a right to judge other people's personal style? This isn't LA. Fashionistas... I've seen you, walking around in 30 degree weather, strutting in jeggings, short skirts and high heels while the rest of us bundle up in our fleece and frumpy cold weather gear. Trust me, you look far more ridiculous that the comfortable person who is dressing for the weather. bwahaha.

  • How do we stop the Blue Angels?
    N1022796599_2051_small

I'm not complaining because I'm a liberal, or a bitch, or because I hate America (what ignorant suburb did you crawl out of Kip?). Great to see the other side is full of intelligent, original retorts though! Bwahaha.

I'm complaining because it's a HUGE waste of money in a time when we are slashing funding for schools, libraries, public wading pools, transit, and just about everything else.

Come to think of it, why is it that the same people who bitch and moan about how they want less government and reduced gov spending are coincidentally the same people who whoop and cheer when the government blows a shitload of money on stuff like Seafair and the Angels? Let's move this nonsense out to redneck country where they are into this kind of stuff. And how about you guys pay for it too? Typically at an airshow, you go pay admission. Here, we are all forced to pay for it, whether we want to see it or not.

You don't pay for me to go to the movies or to dinner, why should I pay for your air show?

And on top of it, they are dangerous, noisy, polluting and senseless... and apparently crash quite often.

  • How naughty is biking on the sidewalk?
    N1022796599_2051_small

It's legal, and a good idea if you're not a hardcore biker. I meander when I ride, and prefer the sidewalks. People around here drive like maniacs and half the time are too busy texting to watch the road. I'll take my chances with irate pedestrians, thanks... Especially downtown, where my husband and my sister have both been victims of hit-and-run while biking the street.
