Hot lemon tea with honey. There are also these Italian throat drops called Chips that work exceptionally well. I don't know where to get them in the states, but my voice teacher used to give them to me whenever I was getting too sick to sing my lesson.
When the weather gets noticeably colder and everybody gets sick, I have a snifter of bourbon (neat with one ice cube. No ice if it's exceptionally good bourbon) either with or after supper. Works wonders for me. Alcohol kills germs. (I'm having a double Jamesons right now, actually.)
Speaking of alcohol killing germs...I was staying with a friend a few months ago and after I was hit hard by a 48 hour bug, his mom made me a delicious concoction that involved tea, bourbon, and dark rum. The fumes from the warm alcohol made it difficult to sip on, but cooled down with ice, it made a nice shot. After I drank that, I stayed in bed for a day and I was out and about in no time at all.
Good luck to you and your lady.
