That looks like a good resource. The interface is absolutely horrifying, though. Almost hilariously so -- obviously not for general public use. But they're just what I wanted!

I can use the crappy 250,000 scale maps for most of the ride, just not the tricky logging road route over the Seymour Range.

    Thanks Fnarf!

Are there any good road maps of Vancouver Island?

This can be fixed, I've seen photos of it. I think what happens is they drill out the cracks to keep them from spreading and then braze a whole shit ton of material into the bottom bracket to hold everything together. It definitely ruins the paint in the bottom bracket.

Those fixes were on lugged frames that have cracked, though and it sounds like you've got a TIGged frame that has plain old broken. That is probably harder to fix and will probably always be weaker than it was before it cracked.

See my comment on the above answer. There appears to be some discrepancy regarding tandems on Cascades specifically. I was told by the Station Agent in Eugene that tandems were not allowed on Cascades, while the phone number said yes. In the end the tandem went on the train sans box (they only had one box anyways).

This really isn't a comment on your answer, Danger, I just can't answer my question. I wanted to describe my experience so if anyone else was curious about this they could learn.

When I got to the station at Eugene they said that they discovered a few days before that tandems are not allowed on Cascades trains because the baggage car was small. The preferred solution is to send the tandem ahead on a Coast Starlight train, presumably boxing it and paying freight fees like you mentioned.

However, since their website makes no mention of this prohibition and the Amtrak rep I called said, "Sure, that's what they do", I did not send the bike ahead of us. It looked like I was going to have to take Cascades alone and meet my tandem at midnight at King St.

Fortunately, the very nice ticket lady at Eugene went around the Station Agent's back and called ahead to Portland. They agreed to transfer the tandem for me when we swapped trains, as long as I signed a damage waiver (She assured me that all the baggage handlers in Portland are cyclists, so I shouldn't worry, which I thought was a nice touch). Thus my tandem was loaded onto the baggage car like a single bike with no issues. Not really sure why there's a prohibition because there was plenty of room on the baggage car for our unboxed tandem.

So, a bit stressful but in the end some excellent customer service saved the day. I will definitely continue using Amtrak!

  • Where can I get my trusty 10 speed serviced without a kid behind the counter giving me an overdose of attitude?

My two favorite shops in town are 20/20 in the CD and Free Range in Fremont.

One time, I wanted to have a headset installed on one of my frames at Free Range, but it didn't fit. I ended up buying a cheap headset that did fit. A week later they called, unsolicited, with a cheap way to make the original headset fit the frame. I took it back, they did the work for free and even let me return the headset (which I had used for a week) for a full refund!

Not only are they thoughtful, they are very polite and friendly. I love that shop.

The Bikery is a cool idea, but I thought most of their parts were ancient, broken, or worn out to the point they weren't useful. Haven't been there in a while, though.

Also, try Bike Works (bigger selection than Recycled), craigslist, and ebay.com.
