There has been research done on this. Melody stimulates the auditory cortex, and when the song stops, an "echo" of the song remains bouncing around in the brain.

Tunes that are most likely to become earworms are repetitive, rather simple melodies. When the tune is interupted, your brain fills in the blanks in much the same way that your eyes complete an image with only a few familiar visual cues. Then you have to sing "Roxanne" to scratch your brain's itch.
