Alison develops and implements reform strategies aimed at replacing over-reliance on criminal sanctions with approaches that treat drug use as a public health concern and at the same time respect civil liberties, reduce incarceration, and promote racial justice. Her work includes public education, policy advocacy, and litigation. Before joining the ACLU in 2006, she was a trial lawyer for thirteen years.

Alison is a past vice-president of the Washington Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers and former chair of the Legal Frameworks Group of the King County Bar Association’s Drug Policy Project. She has served on the Seattle City Council’s I-75 Marijuana Policy Review Panel and its Jail Capacity Study Advisory Group, which examined the impact of alternative approaches to low-level drug offenses on jail use.

Alison received her B.A. from Stanford University and her J.D. from the University of Washington School of Law.

I am the Executive Director of The Recording Academy Pacific Northwest Chapter (www.grammy.com). I am a long time member of the Seattle music community and over the years have played in the bands Alcohol Funnycar, Popsicle, St. Bushmills Choir, Sanford Arms and Burning Rivers. I volunteer as an instructor through Seattle Emergency Management for earthquake retrofit classes teaching homeowners how to secure their homes.

I grew up in Minneapolis MN and spent a large percentage of my childhood out exploring the wilderness and wild areas around home and afar. In 1996, after graduating from college in St. Paul MN (Macalester College), I left to spend most of a year in South America – trekking and researching tropical forests in Bolivia, Peru and Brazil. It is here that I discovered the importance of creating positive experiences for people in the outdoors - you can’t love what you don’t know, and people won’t protect what they don’t love. I came back to the US in 1997 to get a graduate degree in Environmental Education from the University of MN at Wolf Ridge Environmental Learning Center and shortly after completion I moved to Seattle.

Our mission at EverGreen Escapes is to create an exciting and comfortable learning environment in which people feel inspired AND a sense of accomplishment. We work to creatively help people escape from the chaos and stress of everyday life and appreciate the natural and cultural beauty of our region.
